Hi friend and fellow animal lover-

Personally, I love nature and animals and I’ve been around them for my entire lifetime. Starting when I was a little girl. My childhood was so odd and unique that I joke about having spent half of it in the zoo, and not just as an observer either. You see, my Father was an artist and was always sketching living things, sometimes at the zoo. But for a while there he had an arrangement with a zoo near where we were living that let him bring animals home to sketch. Not just any animals either, I remember when we had a cheetah in a cage in the front yard. Then there was the caged monkey that shared my room – that guy was some kind of a brat too, let me tell you. Maybe my Pet Psychic skills began there – as a means of self-defense!

The list of animal companions that shared my world goes on and on; a Minah bird who cried like my infant sister, the parrot that learned to imitate my brother calling his dog – and then the subsequently confused Freddie running around looking for him. Then there was the drunken cockatiel who demanded sips of sherry and then wouldn’t talk to anyone the next day when she had a hangover. And those are just a few of the birds we had around.

There were snakes (boa constrictors and rattlesnakes just to name a few), turtles, cats, dogs – lots of dogs – lizards, fish, birds, frogs, and flying guinea pigs (Orville and Wilbur Wright). But the list topper had to be the scorpion that my Dad was studying for a sculpture he was commissioned to do.

Now I live on a farm, with more ‘useful’ animals, sheep, chickens, horses, donkeys, mules, goats, llamas, alpaca, cows, and my beloved bee hives. Currently my son and I are having a great time with the donkey pair that I named Hee and Haw, the mule I named Cleevis and the lonely colt I call Earl. But they are all animals, and occasionally, they all have something to say, or need to be tuned into for various reasons, from health problems, to when we need to track down a missing sheep or an AWOL guard dog.
