This story just hit the news today:
£1 million for ‘world’s most expensive dog’
A Red Tibetan Mastiff puppy has become the world’s most expensive dog after being sold for almost £1 million.
Tibetan Mastiffs are huge and fierce guard dogs that have stood watch over nomad camps and monasteries on the Tibetan plateau for centuries.
They are thought to be one of the world’s oldest breeds, and legend has it that both Genghis Khan and Lord Buddha kept them. Read the rest of the story: Tibetan Mastif
I have to take exception with a couple of things in this story:
1) Tibetan Mastiffs are only fierce against dangers to those they protect (people). I lived with 9 – yes NINE of them for almost a year, and they were wonderful with my baby boy – then under a year old. Two of them were actually his companions. It has been the Chinese media spin that publicizes them as being very vicious and dangerous. They actually have very sweet dispositions, but if a tiger, or a wolf or even a lion were to attack you, they would defend you – and win.
2) My dear friend Martha Hamilton Snyder raises these dogs in Virginia. Yes, they are very rare in the US. She has a wonderful assortment of bloodlines and very beautiful dogs. One of her dogs is a BLUE Tibetan Mastiff named Avalanche, and he is beautiful and enormous, promising to be a real show stopper should he go that route.
‘Avalanche’ is not a Red Tibetan Mastiff like the one featured in the story above, he is a Blue Tibetan Mastiff and a truly exquisite dog.
